You may have seen the headlines recently that actor and comedian Tracy Morgan is in critical condition following a crash involving his limo and a semi. The truck accident happened on around 1 a.m. June 7 in New Jersey as Morgan, along with several other passengers, were headed back after a performance earlier that night.
Two other passengers in the limo were injured along with Morgan, and another passenger who was riding with them was killed. Morgan was rushed to the hospital.
The accident happened when the semi driver failed to see that traffic ahead was slowing. By the time he did, it was too late. He swerved, but hit the back of Morgan’s limo before careening into another vehicle. The limo then spun several times, hitting a few other vehicles in the process, and finally settled on its side.
Police have now charged the driver with four instances of assault by auto and one instance of death by auto. Authorities believe that driver fatigue played a role in the wreck — he was apparently sleeping at the wheel at the time of the accident.
Many Oklahomans think that, when something like this happens to them, the only recourse for justice is criminal charges. But the civil courts exist so that victims and the families of victims don’t have to shoulder the burden of medical costs, loss of wages and pain and suffering alone.
If an accident like this has happened to you or a loved one, an Oklahoma attorney can look at your case and, if negligence can be proven, he or she may be able to help you fight for compensation.
