A murder trial for the driver that caused a fatal head-on collision was ordered by a judge earlier today.
According to Tulsa Jail logs, 24-year-old Jerry Newman is set to appear for arraignment October 3rd, 2017. Newman will stand trial for counts of felony murder in the first-degree and other charges related to his recklessness in a stolen vehicle. According to the initial report, Newman stole a natural gas truck and was discovered by police. Upon discovery, Newman fled and led officers on a wild chase. Newman sped across active runways at Tulsa International to evade capture.
After avoiding taxis and police on the runways, he crashed through a fence leaving airport grounds. Once on the highway, Newman began driving into oncoming traffic in the northbound lanes of U.S. 75. He managed to evade cars for a short amount of time, but his luck only took him so far. As Newman tore through traffic, he eventually made it near 36th street. There his vehicle collided with a car driven by 20-year-old William Bruckman. The two cars collided head-on and Bruckman was killed in the incident. Newman tried to flee on foot but was quickly captured by officers.
We offer our condolences to the family of William Bruckman and hope the trial will provide further closure to their family.
