Drowsy driving caused an early morning crash in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Monday. The crash took place at approximately 2 a.m. on the Turner Turnpike, near mile marker 30. The sequence began when the driver fell asleep at the wheel. After falling asleep, his truck collided into the back of another vehicle. After the initial collision, the truck continued on, rolling over three times before eventually coming to rest on the highway. Authorities with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the collision. Miraculously, the man emerged from the crash with only a few bumps and bruises and no major injuries. He remembers very little from the moments leading to the crash and does not remember falling asleep while driving. Authorities did not release any further details about the crash or why the man fell asleep at the wheel. No other drivers were injured.
Everyone is familiar with crashes caused by driving under the influence, reckless driving, or speeding. However, it is important to remember that drowsy driving is equally as dangerous. Drivers can be drowsy when they do not get enough sleep, when they have a medical condition or when they are suffering side effects from taking a drug or prescription medication. The effects of drowsy driving lead to slowed reaction times and create a huge danger for other motorists.
Authorities in this case have yet to attribute the man’s drowsy driving to a specific cause. We are happy to hear that there are no serious injuries from this accident. Based on the details in the story, it certainly could have been a lot worse.
