A GEFCO factory accident in Enid led to the death of one worker on Tuesday. The worker’s name was identified as Derek Steier, a 28-year-old who was struck by a heavy metal frame in the Oklahoma factory. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital around 11:16 a.m.
At the time of the accident, a crane was being used to lift a heavy piece of equipment. It slid, however, which caused Steier to be crushed against a worktable. The safety team at GEFCO and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were called to investigate the accident.
Derek’s coworkers and boss say that he was a positive and motivated worker who left an impression on everyone around him. He participated in the safety committee and tried to improve his work every single day.
This was the second fatality at GEFCO within the year. The other took the life of 52-year-old Eriberto Rivas, who was crushed between two pieces of equipment that were being loaded onto a trailer.
In many workplace accidents, workers will lose their lives. Every day, more than 100 Americans will lose their lives in workplaces across the country. In 2011 alone, over 4,600 people lost their lives due to accidents that could have been easily prevented.
