A Chickasha man currently serving in the Navy, who was home on leave, is now in critical condition at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center following a run in with a drunk driver in late April.
The incident happened when the man was invited to a bonfire party near Dibble that was being hosted by an 18-year-old woman from the area.
That’s when witnesses say a man from Blanchard, who was not invited and was clearly inebriated, showed up and started making trouble for the other party-goers. When he was asked to leave, the suspect reportedly returned to his truck and began driving in circles and flinging dirt on everyone at the bonfire.
Although they did not know one another, the allegedly drunk driver decided to target the soldier. Eyewitnesses say it appeared he deliberately ran over him with his truck and peeled off.
Hours later, officers found the suspect asleep in a pool of vomit at his parents’ home. He was arrested on the scene and police have charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to the office of the McClain County Sheriff, upgraded charges could be coming in the case.
The suspect had no previous record, but did have a protective order filed against him earlier this year.
Other drivers can be unpredictable, especially when alcohol or drugs are involved. Always exercise caution and, if you’ve been the victim of a drunk or distracted driver, consult with an attorney who handles auto accidents. He or she may be able to help you get compensation for medical expenses and any pain and suffering the accident may have caused you.
